Alice (Jan Švankmajer, 1988)

Švankmajer’s first feature-length film, blending live-action and stop-motion animation in a surreal, dreamlike retelling of Carroll’s story. Titled "Něco z Alenky" ("Something from Alice") in Czech, it stars Kristýna Kohoutová as Alice and features animated taxidermy, toys, and household objects. Švankmajer rejected fairy-tale interpretations, instead presenting the narrative as an amoral dream driven by unconscious impulses.

Directed by Norman Z. McLeod. Lavish pre-Code Hollywood adaptation featuring an all-star cast. Charlotte Henry stars as Alice, with Cary Grant as the Mock Turtle, Gary Cooper as the White Knight, and W.C. Fields as Humpty Dumpty. Notable for its elaborate makeup and set design, and for blending material from both of Carroll’s books. Includes a rare animated sequence by Harman-Ising Studio.
